DICAST®, the flagship product of OSS, defines a new paradigm
in chemical detection. Rather than relying on arrays of conventional
point sensors, DICAST® uses unique chemically sensitive
optical cables to provide wide-ranging detection capabilities.
With DICAST®, the cable is the sensor, leading to a number
of advantages over old-style multipoint detection systems:
Seamless coverage: DICAST® systems can be easily
deployed with absolutely no gaps between detectors.
Broad area coverage: DICAST® cables extend the
range of detection- each unit, with cables, has a 400' range.
Faster system response time: Because the cable-based
detection technique gives each DICAST® module an effective
"footprint" hundreds of times larger than a conventional
point detector, DICAST® can detect chemical threat agents
much more quickly than conventional systems.
Lower system parts count: Because DICAST® units
can be spaced much farther from one another than conventional
detectors, less units are needed to provide coverage equivalent
to point sensor systems.
Flexible architecture: DICAST® sensor cables can
be installed in linear, curved, or serpentine patterns, to
provide "around-the-corner" and "total area"
detection capabilities impossible with conventional point
sensors or standoff detectors.
Currently under development, and supported by significant
funding from NASA, DARPA, and the multi-agency Technical Support
Working Group (TSWG), DICAST® entry products will be aimed
at fixed-facility protection. Next-generation DICAST®
systems will include rapid-deployment and fenceline monitoring
systems.
